It doesn't seem that long ago, when the commercials and billboards constantly rotated with milk promotion. from children to celebs, the milk mustache became a popular sight to see. Back in the day, the there was a milkman part of a special service; delivering raw milk in glass bottles to your door. What happen to milk?
A healthier Alternative
Fresh alternative milks are more healthier than non-Organic, pasteurized cow milk. Over the years, nut, coconut, rice, seed and soy milks have increased in popularity. The healthiness of animal milk is being greatly challenged. The lack of calcium and enzymes for starters, makes alternative milk more appealing. People are developing sensitivities to animal based milk. If you're lactose intolerant its best to avoid dairy. Alternative milks offer an array of vitamins and minerals free from animal bi-products and hormones.
What about Soy Milk?
I encourage alternative milk consumption. I don't recommend soy milk. My main two reason out of many, is that soy interferes with natural hormone balance and the soy that is readily accessible is from GMO soybeans.
Caution still needed
Even with purchasing alternative milk, caution is still needed. Look out for milk with added sugar and additives. Be aware of preservatives! Carrageenan is a popular thickening agent which has been linked to gastrointestinal inflammation. Alternative milks are NOT made equal. There are alternative milks that are processed, have added flavoring, sugar and preservatives. The kind of alternative milk that can sit on the shelf for weeks. This form of alternative milk is actually depleted of vital nutrients. Purchase alternative milks that are strictly fresh, made with simple ingredients and needs refrigeration. There are some awesome companies that make raw, organic, fresh, unpasteurized nut milks. Look for cold-pressed alternative milks, especially those that have a short life to receive higher nutrition.
